Seeking the next Dodworth Musical Director

Position: Musical Director and Conductor of the Dodworth Saxhorn Band

     As America’s premier 19th Century brass band, the Dodworth Saxhorn Band (DSB) is committed to bringing America’s past to life through recreating a community brass band. Audiences are entertained with instruments, music and dress of the period, and are educated about the instruments and music, as well as the social, political and historical era which produced them. The Dodworth Saxhorn Band is a Michigan 501, c-3 non-profit corporation of professional musicians, a volunteer Board of Directors and several paid staff members. It is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

     The DSB is seeking a Musical Director/Conductor who has had previous conducting experience in public performances and is open to opportunities presented by a non-traditional conducting role, to include interacting with the vocalists and audience during performances. 


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in music required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Good conducting technique in rehearsals and public performances. 
  • Able to identify areas for improvement and to communicate to players in an efficient yet positive manner.
  • Previous experience with a brass band is an asset.
  • Ability to establish a professional atmosphere while working with players of various ages and backgrounds.


Responsibilities 

  • Set the musical expectations and goals for the band.
  • Rehearse the band and conduct performances.
  • Actively work with the Artistic Director in the development of the band’s programming and presentation.
  • Actively promote the band by participating in radio, TV and print interviews.
  • Attend executive committee meetings.
  • Actively participate in show development as a member of the Performance Committee.
  • Submit to an annual review and evaluation by the board.


Time Requirements

Performances:   6-10per year 

Rehearsals:   8-10per year

Executive committee Meetings:  4 per year

Performance Committee:   2-3times per year
 

Compensation schedule

  • $150 per month
  • $100-$130 per performance
  • $20 per rehearsal
